What is Urban Research?Urban Research is one of the foundations of urban planning, as most planning projects require some research at the beginning. For example we carry out a lot of land use and demographic research & analysis as part of our own projects. SHRAPNEL URBAN PLANNING also provides such services for selected other planning consultants who prefer to utilize our comprehensive data and expertise in this area, rather than capture and maintain their own. The term "Urban Research" may also be extended to incorporate those parts of urban planning that lend themselves to a highly analytical or "systems" approach. Where individual "systems" (for example the retail system, the traffic system) within the overall urban or regional context can be defined and elements of them quantified, they can be modeled using a variety of computerized techniques. The value of such techniques lies in being able to derive results from a quantified base, thus allowing clear discussion and agreement about a model's assumptions before a result is obtained. The other major benefit of these techniques is the ability to answer "what if" questions once an urban model has been defined and established. For example, "what if" a particular shopping centre was expanded by 10,000 square metres. Would it be viable? Would it have too adverse an impact on other centres in the district? Such questions can be addressed using computerised urban systems analysis. Scope of ActivitiesTony Shrapnel commenced using these computerised techniques in the early eighties. Since then he has developed continuously with the technology and acquired computer modeling skills which have to date been successfully used in the following areas:
Innovations have, in particular, been made in the field of commercial centres planning. Tony was the first in Western Australia to develop and use the technique of modeling complex commercial systems using a standard package available on most office computers. In recent times land use modeling has been integrated with transport modeling, all of which has been integrated with sophisticated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce output that is far easier to interpret and understand that traditional forms of model outputs. One of the main purposes for which these tools have been used in recent times is in the preparation of Local Commercial Strategies. SHRAPNEL URBAN PLANNING has to date prepared Commercial Strategies for the following local governments in Western Australia:
